About Capt. Joe

If you love fishing, or was wishin’ you was fishin’, I’ll show you how to do it right. Whether you’re game for fishing in the waters of Miami, Biscayne Bay and Upper Keys for bonefish, permit and tarpon, or heading out to the Flamingo to hook some redfish, snook, trout, or tarpon, go no farther.

Wherever we go, though, prepare for some serious fun!

Capt. Joe Gonzalez has been fishing the South Florida area since his childhood. While growing up Joe spent his summers fishing in the Florida Keys and The Bahamas. He is a native to Florida and his love and passion for the sport led him to pursue this career which he started  in 1987.  Since then, Joe has fished from Biscayne Bay – to the Florida Keyes – to Flamingo.  Joe specializes in flyfishing and light tackle fishing for bonefish, permit, tarpon, redfish, snook, trout, shark, barracuda and more.

In 2003, Capt. Joe Gonzalez began working with the University of Miami’s Tarpon & Bonefish Research Program. He has tagged over 1,500 bonefish and has been influential in acoustic telemetry studies in bonefish movements and migrations. With Dr. Jerry Ault (from The University of Miami) on board, leading and conducting studies, Joe has been active in the bonefish census taking place in Biscayne Bay and The Florida Keys. In 2008, Joe played a vital part in introducing the tagging program to fishing guides and lodges in Los Roques, Venezuela. Earlier this year, Capt. Joe received the second Jose Wejebe Professional Guide Award awarded to one of Hells Bay’s Certified Guides and Captains.

Capt. Joe Gonzalez has written articles for several fishing magazines as well as a Chapter on permit fishing in “Shoal Water Fishing,” a book authored by Jan Maizler. He has also been featured on “ESPN’S George Poveromo’s Saltwater Sportsman” as well as “OLN” with Buck Buchanen; TeleMiami’s “Vamos a Pescar” (Let’s Fish); Brazil’s “Pesca y Compania” (Fishing & Company); FlatsClass TV on the World Fishing Network and Florida’s Sunshine Network; Costal Conservation Association Star Tournament videos releasing redfish in the Miami-Dade area; and has done fishing reports for WPLN’S TV station. He has appeared as an instructor and guest speaker in Saltwater Sportsman’s National Seminar Series as well as fishing clubs, expos and shows throughout Florida. Capt. Joe has also been recognized on The Watery Rave as one of the Top Guns On The Moon Clown Circuit in Costa Del Mar’s Project Permit. Various blog articles have been written about Captain Joe’s charters, such as VisitFlorida.com: Fly-fishing Day or Night and How to Go for a Flats Slam in Biscayne Bay; Alister & Paine: Gone fishin’ in Biscayne Bay; and Bonefish on the Brain: Interview with Joe Gonzalez.
